Aboriginal Planning Ahead

The Aboriginal Wills Handbook and its companion booklet Taking care of business aim to enable Aboriginal people to make culturally appropriate planning ahead documents.

The Aboriginal Wills Handbook and Taking care of business give specific information to help in the preparation of an Aboriginal person’s Will. For example, advice is given on how to provide for:
• kinship
• burial
• secret knowledge.

The advantage of a culturally appropriate Will is that it is more likely to reflect a person’s wishes than intestacy laws which apply when no Will is made. This in turn can help prevent disputes relating to burial, guardianship of children and the distribution of personal property.
