Pets and Wills
Many people overlook their pets when making their Will – but it’s important to make plans for their well-being and ensuring they are properly cared for if they outlive you.
As much-loved companions and family members for many of us, have you considered what will happen to your pet when you pass away or become unable to care for them?
How do I include care of my pet in my Will?
Important things to consider include:
-
your pet’s expected lifespan
-
upkeep costs for the rest of their life (vets, food, exercise, insurance, etc)
-
ensuring you have someone reliable to look after your pet when you pass away.
When providing wishes for the care of your pet in your Will, there are a few options you can consider:
-
a legacy to a friend or relative with a non-binding request and gift of money to look after your pet – try to speak with that person first to ensure they are comfortable with this responsibility
-
a legacy program with an animal charity or organisation
-
leaving a gift of money to an organisation in exchange for them looking after or re-homing your pet
-
a trust for the care and maintenance of your pet
-
euthanasia.
